No Kill Shelter Feral Cat Colony Support Program
Adoptions Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program

No Kill Shelter
As the oldest no-kill shelter in Upstate South Carolina, CCA is happy to provide a chance for abandoned, sick, injured or otherwise unwanted animals to receive a new start with a loving family.

The combined efforts of a heavily involved management team, our caretakers and an active volunteer base ensure that all shelter residents receive first-class care and socialization. All CCA animals are fully vetted upon coming into the shelter and are spayed or neutered prior to placement in a new home. Any medical care the animal might need is provided.

You can become a vital part of this rewarding work, in lots of ways. Apply to become a volunteer!

Adoptions
Bringing an animal into the shelter and providing any necessary medical care is just the tip of the iceberg. Once the new pet is healthy and has been evaluated, the search begins for a “forever” home.

CCA has an extensive application process that may seem to slow down adoptions, but we believe it is important for both the pet and the family to be sure that the placement is a good fit. To do so, an initial phone interview is conducted followed by completion of an application for adoption. Once the application is received, references are checked and a home visit may be scheduled. During this review process, the CCA adoption team consistently evaluates the needs and requirements of the prospective adopters and compares them to our available animals. One or more may be selected as potential candidates. At this point, the entire family is invited out to the shelter to meet their prospective new family members.

Though extensive, we find that this procedure helps to ensure that human and animal members of the family are happy in their new lives together.

Feral Cat Colony Support Program
Feral cats are the forgotten felines in our community.  A feral cat has had little or no contact with humans and has reverted to its wild instincts to survive. Many are kittens born to unaltered pets and are taught by their mothers to fear humans. They are not aggressive and usually run when approached.

Cats are domestic animals however, and need care and food to survive. Often they form family groups, called colonies around a reliable food source such as a dumpster or restaurant. The lucky ones are helped by caring people who provide food and water to a colony.

Even if caring individuals or groups provide food and water to a feral colony, the cats continue to breed – the colony grows larger and becomes an increasing problem in the community.

The CCA Solution
Recognizing the problem, CCA offers a humane, non-lethal effective solution. This solution is known as TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return). This program stabilizes the colony and prevents uncontrolled breeding.

All cats in a colony are humanely trapped, tested for disease, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for parasites, and then returned to the colony and their caretaker. The colony is healthy and stabilized and managed by the caretaker for the rest of its life.

How the Program Works
An individual caring for a feral cat colony may contact a CCA FCCP committee member and request assistance in stabilizing the colony.  A stabilized colony depends on its caretaker for daily support.  To obtain CCA support, the caretaker must agree to

  • Ensure daily fresh food and water
  • Remove all trash and uneaten food from the site
  • Monitor colony health and provide TNR assistance for new colony members
  • Participate in TNR days scheduled for this and other colonies.

In return, CCA FCCP provides:

  • Advice and training
  • Shelters and feeding stations as needed
  • TNR clinic to trap, vaccinate, spay/neuter and return each cat to the colony
  • Follow up assistance to maintain a healthy stabilized colony for the remainder of its life

Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program
The Problem
Pet overpopulation is at epidemic proportions in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of wonderful pets are destroyed annually at humane societies and shelters across the country. Untold others are killed on our roadways, die of hunger, disease and a myriad of other causes.

At the root of the problem is the high number of unaltered pets. Medical costs for the spay/neuter procedure have risen dramatically over past years. In some cases, this increase puts the cost of the surgery out of reach to many concerned pet owners.

The Solution
CCA believes that spaying and neutering is an essential component of reducing the population of unwanted, abandoned and otherwise homeless pets. Consequently, the organization maintains a Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program to make the expense of the surgery affordable for more pet owners. With the support of our wonderful veterinary partners, CCA provides certificates for spaying and neutering to the public for a minimal fee.

Download an application! Applications are also available by calling 243-4222 (4CCA) and leaving your name, address and telephone number on the spay/neuter line.

An application form will be mailed out promptly. The completed form is then returned to CCA along with the fee for the surgery. Once we receive the completed application and payment, a certificate is issued for surgery at the office of one of our veterinary partners. The pet owner may then contact the program vet to schedule an appointment for the surgery.

Each pet must be current on vaccines prior to the surgery. Should vaccines be needed, the pet owner pays the veterinarian directly. These expenses are not included with the spay/neuter certificate.
